UTEP coach Tim Floyd ejected, escorted off the court by police

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Never seen a coach get police escorted out of a game?

Bonus points to anyone who can identify the Cosby sweater who comes out on the court to rescue Floyd from himself. Is it the UTEP Athletic Director? That seemed like an AD move to me.

Ray Allen “This team right here, they don’t belong on the same floor with us…”

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

I saw this on SportsCenter this morning, and immediately wanted to hear it again when I got to work. Hats off to Reds Army for tracking down the goods. This is the caliber of pregame speech that makes Kevin Garnett skip the lay-up lines in favor of spending warm-ups head-butting the hoop’s pole pad.

Reds raises an interesting point – who is that Celtics roster member who aptly responds nope after Ray’s fightin’ words?

Happy Birthday Bob Ryan

Monday, February 21st, 2011

Happy Birthday, Bob Ryan. The long-time Boston Globe penman turned 65 today. He’s had a fairly illustrious sportswriting career – Bill Simmons once called him the best basketball writer ever. Another fun factoid I just learned from his Wikipedia page is that he once directed fans to his Wikipedia page instead of admitting to a mistake that he made in an article when he was questioned about it on Around the Horn. Also it says on there that him and Peter Gammons started as interns at the Globe on the same day back in the 70s.

Happy Birthday from me, Bob. I’ve decided it would be weird to post a birthday message on your Facebook wall so I’m not going to do it – it’s weird enough that you accepted my Facebook friend request in the first place.

Watch: Marvin Gaye’s smooth rendition of the National Anthem at the 1983 All-Star game

Sunday, February 20th, 2011

I care very little about tonight’s NBA All Star game. However, I wouldn’t have minded being at the 1983 game to see Kareem, Magic, Bird, Dr. J, Isaiah and hear Marvin Gaye’s soul-drenched version of The Star Spangled Banner.

Groban’s tonight will be less memorable.

A car and a Blake Griffin were on a basketball court at the same time. I think you know the rest.

Blake Griffin and Ben Gleib are adorable together

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

Blake Griffin took over MySpace today? At least it ensured that one 21-year old visited MySpace today – that’s assuming of course that MySpace made Blake actually go on MySpace to do stuff for them.

I’m not a sports marketing technician, so let’s not belabor the brand alignment here. Also, some of this content is pretty damn sweet. For instance, Blake palling around with comedian Ben Gleib.

Too saccharine for some of you Blake maniacs? Check out this video of what Blake sees when he posterizes someone:

Still too whimsical? Maybe abandon Blake’s MySpace content, and go read this Salon article on the rappers who were on Jimmy Fallon last night, Odd Future – Rape, Murder and SWAG…

What stadium or arena is the most dangerous to walk into wearing the jersey of the opposing rival?

(Hey, cool! You can now post to a WordPress blog from Quora, which is what I did here. Had to log-in and doctor the post – not surprising – which is what I’m doing now.)

Nike releases ad featuring everyday super athletes – who are some of these people?

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

I subscribe to Creativity Online’s email distribution, because I have a high opinion of my brain. The content is a lot of agency comings and goings, but every once in awhile they post a video that I really enjoy and appreciate.

For instance, yesterday, they posted this ad from Nike’s braintrust Wieden + Kennedy that “celebrates the achievements of everyday athletes and aims to inspire movement.”

You will watch and find out that some of these people are far from everyday athletes.

Who are some of these superior humans?  The guy who can do a back-flip in his wheelchair must be known, right? I’d love to find out.

Lil Wayne releases Packers freestyle (Green & Yellow)

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

Well, Lil Wayne went and did it, and he delivered.

I’m from New Orleans, but I’m a Packers fan/We knocked the Eagles and the Falcons and the Bears off/Now we ’bout to cut Troy Polamalu’s hair off.

Hear the full Green & Yellow freestyle at Nah Right. I’m not sure why they went with a photo of Lil Wayne bowling – other than to remind us that even his shins are fully tatted.

And once more, do check out the Kobe rap from awhile back if you missed that.

Clay Matthews on, what else, shampoo vs. conditioner?

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

Media Day, oh yeah.

And for the vast majority of us who are not (and never will be) at media day, a number of the media present are keeping it light and humorous on Twitter – like CBS’s resident Dean Winters lookalike Gregg Doyel.

It was friend of Steady Burn, CBS and Guyism.com’s Will Brinson who just posted this video of AP Defensive Player of Year snub Clay Matthews fielding the age old question for men with curiously long hair: What’s more important – shampoo or conditioner?

Matthews took the question abundantly seriously.

According to Brinson, this question (and that lock in the moisture lead you heard) came from the “Toon Network guy.” Hope he means H. Jon Benjamin.
