Who is Romain Gavras (Director, M.I.A. ‘Born Free’)?

Monday, April 26th, 2010

If you’re like me – meaning you don’t like Justice and don’t pay attention to them, even though they look really cool – you had never heard of French director Romain Gavras until this morning’s agitating M.I.A. video release. Now, if you’re like me, you not going to forget his name for sometime.

To be honest, I’m not sure I can name a single music video director other than Hype Williams. It takes a lot to make a lasting impression in that medium (copious overuse of fisheye lenses, etc.). Today, Gavras proved that blowing off a young ginger’s head is one way to do that – can I use ginger colloquially still or is that offensive? And what do the South Park creators think about this? This clip is a conversation starter.

If you want to avoid asking boorish questions like that, here are some more of Gavras’ videos to help get acquainted with his style – I think they call this verite. Or he might just like shooting close-ups of people looking angry.

Man Brought to Justice after High Speed Chase (Ha! in a Golf Cart)

Monday, October 20th, 2008

DATELINE! Salt Lake! When evading the authorities, meets leisure sport activity. The Associated Press is reporting that a Utah man has been apprehended after leading police on a high speed chase in a golf cart…

“Officers started pursuing the driver after he was spotted spinning out in a city park in Morgan. He took off into an alfalfa field and jumped irrigation ditches that the sheriff’s cruisers couldn’t cross. Morgan County Sheriff’s Sgt. Scott Peay suspects the cart was fitted with a car engine instead of the original electric motor. “

Suspects? He jumped multiple ditches!

I’ll stay on the case (not really) to see what, if anything, this guy gets charged with – improper handling of a motor vehicle within 100 yards of irrigation technology? unlawful destruction of a legume crop?

Pizza Man Clobbers Robber!

I am a huge fan of pizza-man vigilante justice

Ann Curry can barely contain herself…

Then. Something. Changed. YOUR MIND!

I worked as a pizza chef for about eight years, and can say with authority that pizzerias have hundreds (if not, thousands) of ways for you to defend yourself from thieves.

For example, when the guillotine execution went out of style, what do you think happened to all that metal?

Bingo.

In college, I wrote a screenplay about my days making ‘zas. The story culminates with robbers being thwarted after taking deep fryer grease to the corneas. Real Tarantino-esque imagery.

Point is, that criminal is lucky he only encountered the fleet of fist Rudy Sandoval, and not one of the many psychopaths who are prevalent in the paisan industry.

I wonder if the U.S. Pizza Team has offered Sandoval a contract yet. Or if they’re even looking for an enforcer.
